Getting to Khao Sok: Airports, Trains, Minivans

First: which zone are you going to?

Visitors regularly arrive at the wrong entrance. The park HQ in Phanom District (postcode 84250) is the land-based rainforest entrance with the trails, waterfalls and jungle lodges. Cheow Lan Lake is in Ban Ta Khun District (postcode 84230) and is reached by boat from the Ratchaprapha Dam. Check which one your hotel, tour or raft-house booking is in before you set off.

By air

Surat Thani Airport (URT) is the closest airport, about 70 km from the park. Phuket (HKT) and Krabi (KBV) are 2.5–3 hours away by road and are often cheaper for international flights, which is why many travellers combine Khao Sok with an Andaman coast trip.

By train

The Southern Line runs from Bangkok to Phun Phin in Surat Thani. An overnight sleeper from Bangkok arrives in the morning, and the onward road transfer takes roughly 1.5–2 hours to the park HQ. It is a comfortable option for long-haul travellers who would rather not take another domestic flight.

By minivan, bus or private transfer

Minivans and buses from Surat Thani city, Surat Thani Airport, Phuket, Krabi and Khao Lak are the standard way to arrive. Services cluster in the morning, some drop you at your accommodation, and most operators collect guests from the village for a tour or lake transfer.

• ▪ Easiest for the lake — a package that collects you and includes the boat

Driving and navigation

If you drive yourself, note that a search for Khao Sok National Park often points to the mapped park entrance rather than the lake pier. Set your destination by district — Phanom for the park HQ, Ban Ta Khun for the dam pier — or use the Plus code, and refuel before leaving town, as petrol stations thin out west of Surat Thani.

Arriving, fees and onward travel

The national park entrance fee is paid in cash at the checkpoint: foreign visitors 200/100 THB at the park standard rate, or 300/150 THB in the Ratchaprapha Dam / Cheow Lan Lake special-fee zone; Thai nationals 40/20 THB. Park hours are 06:00–18:00 and overnight stays are only permitted in designated lodges, raft houses or the campsite, so plan to arrive in daylight. From Khao Sok it is straightforward to continue to Khao Lak, Phuket, Krabi or the Gulf islands via Surat Thani and Donsak pier. If prices change, the on-site notice prevails.
